10 escape from New Orleans jail through hole in cell wall while lone guard left to get food

  • Ten male inmates fled overnight Friday from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans by breaking through an opening located behind a toilet and climbing over a prison wall.
  • The breakout exploited known facility deficiencies, including defective locks, and the absence of a guard for their pod while getting food prolonged the lapse in security.
  • Authorities discovered the escape during a routine headcount over seven hours later, and one inmate, Kendall Myles, was captured after a short foot chase in the French Quarter.
  • The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office indicated that defective locks and possible assistance from within the department enabled the inmates to escape. Currently, nine fugitives remain at large, ages 19 to 42, including convicted murderers Derrick Groves and Corey Boyd.
  • The sheriff's office and local, state, and federal agencies are conducting a full investigation, and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill condemned the delay in public notification and pledged to prevent future escapes.
