At the end of the French-African Summit in Montpellier (8 October 2021), which turned into a big flop, Emmanuel Macron had announced an innovation fund for democracy. 50 million euros (32.5 billion CFA francs) over five years were then released by France. The launch of the Foundation for the Innovation of Democracy took place in Johannesburg on 6 October 2022.
