First-of-its-kind video captures the terrifying moment the ground tore apart during major Myanmar earthquake
- On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, causing a visible ground rupture at a solar farm near Thazi.
- The earthquake was caused by horizontal movement along the Sagaing Fault, a strike-slip boundary extending 1,400 km between the Burma Microplate and the Sunda Plate, with the rupture spreading both north and south from the epicenter.
- Satellite observations verified a surface rupture stretching more than 460 km, with ground shifts reaching up to 20 feet, causing harm to transportation networks and other critical facilities throughout the affected area.
- Geophysicist Rick Aster remarked that, as far as he is aware, this footage provides the clearest view available of a continuous surface rupture from an exceptionally large earthquake, and noted that seismologists are expected to examine it closely.
- The earthquake caused at least 4,900 deaths and thousands of injuries, while political instability hindered emergency response and medical aid in affected areas.

Watch the Earth Tear Itself Apart in This Insane Myanmar Earthquake Video
In a year already stacked with climate disasters, the Earth tossed in a wild geological rumble in Myanmar, hitting the Southeast Asian nation with a 7.7 magnitude earthquake back in March. The quake brought us what might be the first-ever video of the ground literally splitting apart in real time along a surface fault rupture. The clip was captured at the Green Power Energy Solar Project in Tha Pyay Wa, Mandalay. At the risk of editorializing, i…
Extremely Rare Video Shows the Earth Being Violently Torn Apart During an Earthquake
First of Its Kind A striking video captured in Myanmar during March's devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake shows what scientists believe may be a first-of-its-kind recording of a surface fault rupture, the visible point where the ground over a major faultline splits apart, in action. The video, which went viral on Reddit earlier this week, shows the moment as the Earth begins to quake. A gate flies open as cracks emerge in the cement of what app…
