Budget airline begins deportation flights for ICE with start of Arizona operations

Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based budget carrier, began federal deportation flights on Monday from Mesa Gateway Airport near Phoenix, Arizona.
This development comes after Avelo reached a deal in April with the Department of Homeland Security, coinciding with Congressional discussions on legislation aimed at financing the deportation of one million immigrants annually and increasing the number of ICE officers by 10,000.
Avelo operates as a sub-carrier under New Mexico-based air broker CSI Aviation, which contracts with two other carriers responsible for most ICE deportation flights, totaling nearly 8,000 in the past year.
The deportation flights provoked protests and a boycott petition, with flight attendants’ union citing evacuation safety concerns due to handcuffed deportees, and community leaders calling the business decision contrary to New Haven's values.
Avelo's CEO Andrew Levy acknowledged the topic's sensitivity and said the ICE contract would help the company expand, while declining to disclose financial details as a private airline.
