Do volunteers and study or tourism visas work well together?

You have just moved to Canada with a study or tourism visa. Wanting to meet new people, you want to volunteer with an organization. But is it legal? In Canada, getting involved free of charge for the right cause is not always possible for tourists and foreign students. Even if it does not pay you a penny, some types of volunteering are not available to you if you are visiting the country without a work permit.
