IDignity receives more calls since REAL ID went into place
- On May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration started requiring travelers to present federally approved identification, such as a REAL ID, for boarding domestic flights and accessing federal buildings.
- This enforcement follows the 2005 REAL ID Act, passed after 9/11 to strengthen federal security by tightening identification standards with multiple deadline extensions since.
- In response, IDignity, a nonprofit in Orlando, received increased calls and referrals to help people obtain legal IDs required for travel, with volunteers hosting service days for documentation support.
- Program manager Micaela Cox noted, "our calls do seem to be higher" because many people want help securing the "gold star" on their IDs indicating compliance.
- The new ID rules improve security and prevent fraud but may cause delays, and some travelers without compliant IDs face extra screening though boarding denials were rare on the first day.
