Footwear giants Nike, Adidas and others ask Trump for tariff exemption
- On April 29, 2025, a coalition of U.S. Footwear companies, organized by the industry group FDRA, sent a letter to President Trump requesting that footwear be excluded from the newly imposed reciprocal tariffs.
- The request follows the April 2 announcement of tariffs imposing duties up to nearly 220% on footwear imports, raising concerns about business survival and job losses.
- The letter, signed by 76 companies representing over 80 brands including Nike and Adidas, cited high rates on children’s shoes and warned inventory and orders are disrupted across key supply countries.
- The letter expressed concern that numerous companies are uncertain about how they will cover the expenses for merchandise that has already been shipped and is arriving in the U.S., emphasizing that the tariffs present a critical threat to their survival.
- The trade group cautioned that these tariffs create uncertainty that discourages investment, put tens of thousands of U.S. Jobs at risk, and are unlikely to revive domestic footwear production.
