Provincial forest fire duty officer Jeff Motty told CBC News a fire is burning near Ocean Pond, about 18 kilometres east of Whitbourne. The fire was first reported just after 2 p.m. NT.

Forest fire under control near Ocean Pond

A fire that broke out in a wooded area near Ocean’s Pond late this afternoon is now under control. Forest officials say Newfoundland Power was called because the fire was burning along a power line.

There is a forest fire on the western edge of the Avalon Peninsula burning this hour. The fire, which broke out at about 2:00, is centered about 5km east of Whitbourne on the transmission line. Forestry has been notified. Whitbourne Fire Chief Jamie Budden says there is heavy traffic on the TCH but the smoke is not interfering, however that could change should the wind turn in a different direction.
