Fatal Storms Flood the South of France

At least three fatalities occurred in southeastern France's Var region on Tuesday as intense rainstorms triggered widespread flooding, including an elderly couple who were swept away in Le Lavandou and an 81-year-old who lost their life after becoming trapped in Vidauban.
The extreme flooding followed intense rainfall of around 255 mm in one hour around Le Lavandou, prompting an orange alert that ended at 2pm and causing widespread damage and power outages across the region.

The local leader of Le Lavandou characterized the disaster as an extremely violent and bewildering event, noting that roads were destroyed and bridges collapsed, which resulted in the town losing access to electricity, potable water, and wastewater services.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences to victims' families and pledged national support, stating the relief forces are present to help 'overcome the coming hours' and to rebuild the affected communities.
