Google’s unleashes ‘A.I. Mode’ in the next phase of its journey to change search

On Tuesday, Google launched its new AI mode in the U.S., advancing a year-long transformation of its search engine near Mountain View, California.
This rollout follows a limited two-and-a-half-month test and builds on earlier AI introductions like conversational summaries called AI overviews.
AI mode enables conversational, expert-like interactions on diverse topics and integrates Google’s Gemini 2.5 AI model, while upcoming features include ticket buying and live video searches.
In the year leading up to March 2025, Google attracted an average of 136 billion visits per month—34 times the 4 billion monthly visits recorded by ChatGPT—while clickthrough rates from Google’s search results fell by nearly 30% as users increasingly preferred AI-generated summaries, according to BrightEdge.
The launch reflects Google’s confidence AI mode will strengthen its search dominance despite legal challenges and competition from AI alternatives like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
