About 134,000 LA County Residents Will Get Notices Their Medical Debt Is Eliminated
- More than 134,000 Los Angeles County residents will receive letters starting May 19 informing them their qualifying medical debt has been erased.
- This effort follows the Board of Supervisors' approval last year to purchase and forgive medical debt chiefly from low-income residents using county and charitable funds.
- The program collaborates with Undue Medical Debt and focuses on residents whose income does not exceed four times the federal poverty threshold and who have medical bills amounting to at least 5% of their earnings.
- County officials reported that by spending approximately $1.02 million to buy medical debt accounts at about half a cent on the dollar, they were able to eliminate nearly $184 million in outstanding medical bills.
- The initiative aims to provide immediate financial relief, improve related hospital practices, and prevent medical debt from limiting access to care for approximately one in nine county adults burdened by such debt.
