An amnesty launched to Fulgencio Batista by the mobilization of the people released on May 15, 1955, the young revolutionary leader Fidel Castro of the Presidio Modelo of the then Island of Pinos, along with a group of his fellow assailants to the Moncada barracks, in Santiago de Cuba on July 26, 1953.

Once a part of the revolutionaries were released, they went to the El Abra estate to pay tribute to José Martí, the intellectual author of the military actions in the Moncada and Carlos M. de Céspedes barracks.
