Letter to the editor: A republic, if you can keep it — my response

The U.S. is a constitutional republic, not a “democracy.” The word is never used in the Constitution or Declaration of Independence. While the Federalist Papers do reference it, Federalist No. 10 explicitly warns against democracy, fearing mob rule and erosion of individual rights which is exactly why our system is based on elected representatives bound by constitutional limits.
