Germany's love affair with Israel looks absurd

After 19 months of a genocidal war, several governments finally call for action.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem today and stressed the need to "present political perspectives for ending the war, especially in dialogue with Arab states."

German-Israeli history shows how peace, even reconciliation, can grow out of deepest abysses. Currently, few have this hope. But I know from my travels to the Arab neighbourhood that there is a great willingness to leave the eternal hostility to Israel behind.
