Man stumbles across hoard of priceless coins: 'Face to face with history'
- Marius Mangeac, a metal detectorist, discovered a hoard of 1,469 Roman coins on a field near Letca Veche, Romania, on a Saturday in spring 2025.
- Mangeac went out alone for exercise and relaxation, unaware that this ordinary day would lead to unearthing treasure from the Dacian-Roman era, about 2,000 years old.
- The silver denarii coins are connected to the Dacians, who fought unsuccessfully against Rome during the second century A.D., and Mangeac spent two intensive days documenting them through photography.
- Mangeac recalled his heart "beating quite hard" and said his metal detector began beeping when he found the cache, later handing the coins to the Letca Nou town hall.
- This discovery follows another recent treasure find in Breaza, Transylvania, and Mangeac hopes to show his child this "page of our people's history" in a museum one day.
