Office apps on Windows 10 are no longer tied to its October 2025 end-of-support date
- Microsoft has reversed its previous decision and will extend security patch support for Microsoft 365 Office applications on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028, even though official Windows 10 support ends in October 2025.
- This reversal follows Microsoft’s earlier plan, communicated in January, to end Office app support on Windows 10 along with the OS on October 14, 2025, aiming to push users to upgrade to Windows 11.
- The ongoing security updates will use standard Office update channels and apply to most Microsoft 365 apps while users transition to Windows 11, which Microsoft heavily promotes as the future PC platform.
- Microsoft announced it will continue delivering updates to support your security throughout the transition to Windows 11 and will extend Windows Defender definition updates over the same timeframe.
- The extension helps maintain security for hundreds of millions of Windows 10 users who are reluctant or not yet ready to switch to Windows 11, though Microsoft continues to encourage upgrading due to potential performance issues.
