Endangered species fall through conservation cracks
Conservationists and farmers want “substantial investment” to reverse environmental damage which has put more than 220 critically endangered species “on the edge.” Partly or completely reliant on unprotected land, such endangered species remain vulnerable to agricultural and industrial development. Around half of the 85,000 sq km of habitat on which these species rely is outside the protected estate. Sixty percent of the globe’s land surface has…
Study finds half the remaining habitat of Australia's most at-risk species is unprotected
Australia needs to urgently prioritize state and national conservation policies, according to a new study, with the findings warning that more than 220 critically endangered species are at risk of being lost due to their small distributions coupled with uneven protections.
Revision of the Australian Ozestheria Schwentner & Richter, 2015 (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Spinicaudata) fauna, with the descriptions of 27 new species | European Journal of Taxonomy
We provide an extensive and comprehensive revision of the Australian species of the genus Ozestheria based on an integrative taxonomic approach. In this integrative approach, molecular genetic analyses (COI, 16S and ITS-2) were combined with geometric morphometric analyses of carapace shape, ornamental features and traditional taxonomic assessments including head, thoracopod, telsonic and furcal features as well as carapace length. Initial speci…
More than 220 critically endangered species risk falling through crack
Australian experts warn that more than 220 Australian critically endangered species are at risk of being lost due to their small distributions coupled with uneven protections. In the first known study of its kind, the researchers assessed how much of each species’ habitat in Australia was outside protected areas and considered to have agricultural capability, potentially elevating their risk of extinction.
