The election campaign has been dominated by reactionary posturing, especially anti-migrant xenophobia. Not a single party raises the real issues confronting Portugal’s workers: the descent of capitalism into world war, the escalating crisis of the European Union, or the devastating impact of trade war, austerity and militarism.

The Portuguese returned to the polls on Sunday, a year after the previous legislative elections, after the fall of the centre-right government led by Luis Montenegro.
