Progress closing the mobile internet gender gap stalls in LMICs: GSMA Mobile Gender Gap Report 2025
- According to a 2025 report by the GSMA, there was no advancement in 2024 toward reducing the gender disparity in mobile internet usage within low- and middle-income countries.
- This stall follows a decline in the gap from 25% in 2017 to 15% by 2020, with some fluctuation since, and economic, political, and climatic challenges exacerbated disparities.
- The report reveals that women use mobile internet services significantly less than men, with a notable gap of 14%, equivalent to approximately 235 million fewer female users. This disparity is even more pronounced in regions like South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where the differences reach 32% and 29% respectively, driven largely by challenges related to affordability and digital literacy.
- Claire Sibthorpe, GSMA Head of Digital Inclusion, expressed concern that efforts to narrow the mobile internet access disparity between men and women have plateaued, underscoring the critical need for enhanced coordinated investment and commitment from all parties involved.
- The report suggests that without targeted focus and action, the gender gap will persist, limiting social and economic empowerment for women and delaying potential economic gains of $1.3 trillion by 2030.
