Researchers identify two new crocodile species
- Researchers from McGill University and their Mexican counterparts identified two new crocodile species inhabiting the island of Cozumel and the Banco Chinchorro atoll near the Yucatán Peninsula in 2025.
- This finding resulted from genetic analyses showing that populations on Cozumel Island and Banco Chinchorro atoll differ significantly from known American crocodiles.
- Each of the two recently discovered species exists in limited, separate groups with less than a thousand reproductive individuals per population. Although these groups seem to maintain stability, their small size and habitat limitations render them susceptible to threats.
- Hans Larsson highlighted that species are vanishing at a rate that outpaces our ability to identify and understand the extent of what is being lost, underscoring the critical need to protect these newly discovered organisms.
- Recognizing these distinct species highlights the critical importance of implementing conservation strategies and limiting shoreline development on Cozumel and Banco Chinchorro to ensure their survival.
