Protective Screen up for Iconic Helsinki Statue - Just in Case
- The City of Helsinki erected steel-framed protective screens around the Havis Amanda statue near Market Square in May 2025.
- The screens were installed to prevent damage caused by crowds, especially after celebrations for the Finnish hockey team and other events had harmed the statue.
- The 112-year-old statue underwent full refurbishment over a year ago, but past abuse from intoxicated fans climbing on it prompted the new protective measure.
- Juha Ahonen, who leads Helsinki's Culture and Leisure Division, mentioned that the protective measures will stay in place until at least May 23, with the overall expense totaling approximately 20,000 euros.
- If the Finnish Lions reach the ice hockey finals on May 25 and possibly win gold, the protective screens will stay up until May 26 to guard against large crowds.
