Movie review: 'Thunderbolts*' shows sparks of Avengers' force
- The movie Thunderbolts features Florence Pugh as the feisty Yelena Belova and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who plots a marvelous return from her lair in a recent Disney-Marvel Studios release.
- They are assembled ostensibly to help Valentina, but soon discover she is behind a destructive plot against them, with Louis-Dreyfus portrayed as Iron Man's successor with a Cruella de Vil-adjacent hairstyle.
- The ragtag group, named after a childhood sports team, bonds through adversity while facing another threat amid crashing buildings and troubling black smoke reminiscent of Avengers: Endgame.
- Director Jake Schreier provides Pugh plenty to do, with her stunt work, especially rolling through rubble, earning praise and potential Academy Award nomination consideration despite some uneven childhood scene backfills.
- While Thunderbolts may not yet replace the Avengers, the ensemble could soon make a major impact if Pugh continues to lead and the group stays aligned, though some hints of franchise trouble linger.
