Africa: A Historic Course Correction - How the World's Shipping Sector Is Setting Sail for Net Zero
- In April 2025, the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization endorsed the IMO Net-Zero Framework, a landmark agreement aimed at eliminating shipping-related emissions worldwide by 2050.
- After years of negotiations, a new framework has been established in response to the recognition that shipping contributes about 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and must transition to fuels with zero or near-zero emissions.
- The plan mandates at least a 20 per cent emissions reduction by 2030 for ships over 5,000 gross tonnes, includes a global fuel standard and pricing mechanism, and starts compliance in 2028.
- IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted their immediate priority is achieving the 2030 target, which includes cutting emissions by a minimum of 20 percent, while underscoring the importance of multilateral cooperation.
- This framework initiates a major industry transformation that supports innovation, alternative fuels, and assists developing countries through financial measures and technology transfer.
