ArcelorMittal will invest 1.2 billion euros in Dunkirk... but maintains its social plan

Under the fire of criticism after the shock of a wave of redundancies in France, the world's second steelmaker revives his project to produce greener steel in Dunkirk. But the investment of 1.2 billion euros remains conditional on European support for the sector.

The iron and steel group announced on Thursday its intention to decarbonize its steel plant in the North. Trade unions are still calling for the abandonment of the plan to abolish 636 jobs in the country.

On Thursday, the steelmaker reaffirmed his "intention" to invest in the decarbonisation of his Dunkirk site to the tune of 1.2 billion euros. However, this decision would be effective provided that Brussels implements its measures to protect European steel. The second world steelmaker, facing a historic steel crisis in Europe, is planning to abolish approximately 600 posts in seven industrial sites in northern France.

"We produce where our consumers are," explains Alain Le Grix, President of ArcelorMittal in France. "We are producing where our consumers are."
