ISTANBUL -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul and other areas on Wednesday, Turkey's disaster and emergency management agency said. There were no immediate reports of serious damage in the metropolis of 16 million.

According to an initial assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the magnitude 6.2 earthquake was in the Sea of Marmara, the body of water that connects the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, some 25 miles southwest of Istanbul. Turkish emergency services reported no immediate major casualties.
