On the night of September 25, 1868, the small house of Elzéar Guillemette, in Saint-Christophe-d-Arthabaska, is the prey of flames. The calcined bodies of his wife, his two children and their dog are found under the debris and ashes. Guillemette is the only survivor. He becomes the main suspect of this tragedy. The authorities therefore issue a warrant of arrest against him. He is arrested and must be tried for the murder of his family in 1869. …
