‘They’re unbelievable:’ Canadian veterans receive remarkable reception 80 years after liberating the Netherlands
- On May 4, Canadian veterans, military personnel, and community members gathered at the Victoria Cenotaph in British Columbia to mark 80 years since the conclusion of the Battle of the Atlantic.
- The battle started on September 3, 1939, as Allied naval and air forces fought German and Italian submarines and warships to protect North American convoys.
- The Royal Canadian Navy grew from six destroyers and 3,500 personnel to 373 fighting ships and escorted nearly 25,000 merchant vessels, suffering 2,210 fatalities and losing 33 ships.
- Commander Kevin Whiteside said the fledgling navy was ‘very different’ by war’s end, highlighting that controlling sea lanes was key and this victory honored sailors and aircrew.
- The victory ended with Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, and it ensured future freedoms and prosperity in Canada, according to multiple speakers at the commemorations.
