Thousands join a pro-EU rally in Romania’s capital as pivotal presidential runoff looms
- Thousands of people rallied in Bucharest and other Romanian cities on May 16 to support the country's pro-European Union stance ahead of the May 18 presidential runoff.
- The rallies followed a turbulent election period marked by the annulment of November's vote due to alleged Russian interference and the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, raising election stakes.
- The upcoming runoff pits far-right nationalist George Simion, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, against centrist pro-European Nicusor Dan, who hopes undecided voters will prevent a nationalist shift.
- Simion, aged 38, won 40.9% in the first round and leads polls predicting about 55% in the runoff, while Dan, aged 55, trails behind without explicit pro-European camp backing.
- A Simion victory could reshape Romania's EU and NATO relationships, increase economic uncertainty amid a falling currency, and influence appointment of a new prime minister tied to far-right politics.
