US targets China, Iran-based firms in fresh Iran sanctions
- On Tuesday, the U.S. Government took action against a group of twelve targets—including several people and organizations located in both Iran and China—for supplying materials used in the production of ballistic missile propellants to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
- These sanctions follow President Trump's February 4 memorandum directing maximum economic pressure to curb Iran's missile and nuclear programs amid ongoing nuclear negotiations.
- The sanctioned entities consist of one firm located in Iran, known as Saman Tejarat Barman Trading, along with five other companies based in China that assisted in the transfer of sodium perchlorate and dioctyl sebacate, chemicals essential for manufacturing solid-fuel rocket motors.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted that these shipments breach international frameworks established to restrict the spread of such technologies and warned that Iran's missile advancements pose significant risks to the security of the U.S. And its allies.
- These sanctions reinforce the U.S. Maximum pressure campaign aiming to restrict Iran’s missile capability and complement diplomatic efforts, with talks and a high-level meeting scheduled for early May.
