- At least 10 individuals across four U.S. States have fallen ill due to listeria contamination associated with Fresh & Ready Foods LLC’s pre-packaged sandwiches and snack items.
- The outbreak, linked to cases reported since December 2023, led to a voluntary recall of more than 80 items that were supplied to various retail and travel venues during the week of April 18 through April 25.
- Listeria bacteria are able to survive and multiply even in refrigerated conditions, but thoroughly cooking food to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit eliminates the bacteria. Those at higher risk of infection include young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.
- Federal officials advise anyone with recalled products to discard or return them and to thoroughly clean surfaces like refrigerator drawers and shelves that may have contacted the contaminated foods.
- This outbreak highlights ongoing challenges in food safety given Listeria’s resilience and suggests increased vigilance to prevent serious illness and death, as about 1,600 infections and 260 deaths occur annually in the U.S.
